the Clarendon Hills chamber of commerce

A BRIEF HISTORY

Formed in 1956 by Clarendon Hills business owners, the Chamber helps bolster the reputation of Clarendon Hills as one of the most desirable suburbs in the Chicagoland area.  It’s here that the reputation continues, by providing services meeting the needs of our residents, and the organizational network on which our business community thrives.

Clarendon Hills was officially recorded as a Village in 1873 and incorporated in 1924.  The Clarendon Hills Business District began small with a General Store which was destroyed by fire in 1892.  It was located south of the Burlington tracks on the east side of what is now Prospect Ave.

In the present business district, the first building built in 1911 housed the Post Office and General Store.  It still stands on the southwest corner of Prospect and Railroad Avenues and is the current home of Carpet Showcase.  This is the humble beginnings of our quaint Village business district.  Expansion was slow but steady and continued south along Prospect Avenue, growing into our current shopping district.

The Chamber is a place for residents and customers to connect regarding local businesses, as well as Chamber sponsored and Community partnership events. The Chamber website has a Chamber Member Business Directory making it easy to find information about our Member businesses.

daisies – A Trademark Of Clarendon Hills

The affiliation of the daisy with Clarendon Hills occurred unintentionally.  Henry Middaugh, an affluent resident of Clarendon Hills, decided to purchase special seed for the best grass possible for his grazing cattle and sheep.  What Henry ordered was not what he received.  The special grass seed was actually daisy seed, which he planted his fields with.  One can only imagine Henry’s surprise at the magnificent crop of daisies his seed produced! The Clarendon Hills area received the nickname “Daisy Fields” from train passengers passing through with a view of the beautiful daisy fields. The nickname has remained to this day, and the daisy continues to be a happy trademark of Clarendon Hills.
